This piece is loosely modeled after the Pibroch, a musical form used in the Scottish Highlands bagpipe tradition. In it, a stately melodic theme is repeated over a drone. Each repetition features subtle differences in melodic ornamentation. Typically, this ornamentation evolves gradually from simple to complex, eventually returning to simplicity.
In this piece, two nearly identical pure tones drone throughout the piece. Frequency Modulation is used to synthesize subtle harmonics whose pitches are determined at random. The rhythmic motion and complexity of these harmonics are gradually increased and decreased as the piece progresses through its 22 variations. The piece is accompanied by a slide show of photographs taken in Scotland by the composer.
