Roberta and I tried to camp here early on in our relationship, before we had a car. We hiked from Phoenicia, and ended up staying at a private campground along the way, fearing that woodland valley would be full by the time we made it.
Now, with a car and kids, we looked forward to returning to the area. The local trails were too strenuous for our kids, so we drove a few miles west and hiked the Diamond Notch Trail along the West Kill. This hike was a steady, relatively easy, climb through forest preserve—a good one for kids.
The site itself was near a stream, but at this time of year, the riverbed was dry and rocky. Facilities were fine, although the crowd was a little noisier than expected. Highlight: 2 AM, listening to two owls hoot to each other across the valley. Lowlight: Yellow Jackets everywhere!
